The
City of Glasgow is the most populous unitary
authority area in Scotland. It is situated on the
River Clyde in the west central lowlands of Scotland.
The people of Glasgow are known as Glaswegians.
Glasgow was once known as the "Second
City of the British Empire"
and had a population of over one million people.
During the Industrial Revolution Glasgow established
itself as a major transatlantic trading port with the
Clyde the world's pre-eminent shipbuilding centre
building many famous vessels such as the Queen
Elizabeth and Queen Mary. Today Glasgow has
Scotland's largest and most economically important
commerce and retail sector. It is one of Europe's top
16 financial centres and home to many of the
country's leading businesses. Glasgow is the second
most popular tourist destination in Scotland after
the capital Edinburgh
