- the largest city in Scotland

The City of Glasgow is the most populous unitary authority area in Scotland.

It is on the River Clyde in the west central lowlands of Scotland.

The people of Glasgow are known as Glaswegians.

Glasgow was once known as the "Second City of the British Empire"

and had a population of over one million people.

During the Industrial Revolution Glasgow established itself

as a major transatlantic trading port with the Clyde

the world's pre-eminent shipbuilding centre

building many famous vessels

such as the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary.

Today, Glasgow has Scotland's largest and most economically important

commerce and retail sector.

It is one of Europe's top 16 financial centres

and home to many of the country's leading businesses.

Glasgow is the second most popular tourist destination in Scotland

after the capital Edinburgh
