The Canal provides a route for sea-going vessels at the narrowest part of the Lowlands of Scotland

between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde.

The canal is 35 miles ( 56km ) long. 

It passes through Maryhill in the north of Glasgow

The eastern end connects to the River Forth via the River Carron near Grangemouth.

The western end of the canal connects to the River Clyde at Bowling.

The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift connecting the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal.

The Wheel is the only rotating boat lift of its kind in the world.

It is considered an engineering landmark for Scotland.
