The Victoria Falls ( Mosi-oa-Tunya ) are situated on the Zambezi River on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. They are roughly 1.7 km (1 mile) wide and 128 metres (420 ft) high. They are a remarkable spectacle due to the narrow, slot-like gorge into which the water plunges allowing a face-on view of the falls. |

Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, ( the "smoke that thunders" ), they were named after Queen Victoria by David Livingstone, the Scottish explorer. The falls are part of two national parks:- Mosi-oa-Tunya NP in Zambia and Victoria Falls NP in Zimbabwe, The falls are one of Southern Africa's major tourist attractions and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. |
