The West Highland Way

The 95 mile long West Highland Way was officially

opened for walkers in October 1980. It leads from

Milngavie on the NW outskirts of Glasgow to

Fort William and takes about a week's walking time

if the whole route is covered. The Way passes through

10 settlements where accommodation in hotels,

Youth Hostels, camping sites and private homes can be

found. It is advisable to book in advance at Easter

and at the height of summer. Walkers will discover

magnificent scenery in the wild and unspoilt countryside

through which they pass as they travel along the old drove

roads, footpaths, forest tracks, historic military roads and

disused railway lines which make up the West Highland Way.

The route is clearly marked by the Countryside Commission

for Scotland's long-distance symbol of a thistle within a hexagon

and is protected to ensure that its beauties remain unspoilt for

all to enjoy.
