Andrew's in the Square.
An 18th Century Church in city centre of Glasgow. St Andrews in the Square was formerly a Presbyterian church, the first to be built after the Reformation. It was designed by Allan Dreghorn and inspired by St Martin-in-the-Fields in London Construction began in 1739 and was completed in 1756, making it the third or fourth oldest church in Glasgow, depending on which criterion is used. In December 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army camped on the building site. The church was commissioned by the city’s tobacco lords, and when completed it was considered one of the finest classical churches in Britain |
