Kilmardinny House in Bearsden An imposing Georgian mansion in Kilmardinny Avenue. The Avenue, the Loch and surrounding parkland once formed Kilmardinny Estate. The Estate was formerly held by the Colquhouns but subsequently subdivided and sold. |

Kilmardinny House in Bearsden At the beginning of the 19th century, John Leitch of the West Indies merchants Leitch & Smith acquired Kilmardinny House and made extensive alterations to the building. It thereafter passed to his nephew, James Leitch, who sold it in 1833 to the merchant William Brown, Dean of Guild in 1837 and again in 1856. Brown made more alterations and in 1844 sold Kilmardinny to the merchant William Whyte. It was subsequently acquired c1853 by Robert Dalglish ( an MP for Glasgow, 1857-1874 ) of the Lennoxtown calico printers R Dalglish, Falconer & Co. Dalglish made further extensive alterations to the building. The house is now owned by East Dunbartonshire Council and has become an arts centre. |
