Moldoveanu ( 2544m, 8346ft ) in the Southern Carpathians - highest mountain in Romania

The Southern Carpathian group are the second highest group in the Carpathian Mountain range
 ( after the Tatra ) reaching heights of over 2,500m.

They have an alpine landscape ( known as the Transylvanian Alps ) and are popular with tourists.


Negoiu Carpathians

Negoiu ( 2535m, 9317ft ) in the Fagaras Mountains.

The Făgăraş are the highest peaks in the Southern Carpathians of Romania.
 The highest summits are Moldoveanu ( 2544m ) and Negoiu ( 2535m )

The Retezat of the Southern Carpathians are one of the highest massifs in Romania.
 The highest peaks include Peleaga ( 2509m ) and Păpuşa ( 2508m, 8228ft ).
The Retezat Mountains contain many glacial lakes including Bucura Lake - the largest glacial lake in Romania.
